Local Governments Already Implementing IPCC Suggestions on Climate Change

FREIBURG, GERMANY, 4 MAY 2007– ‘Local governments have proven they are among the most effective levels of government when tackling climate change’, says Konrad Otto-Zimmermann, Secretary-General of ICLEI-Local Government for Sustainability. Cities already implement solu-tions addressing climate change such as those presented today in the 3rd volume of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 4th Assessment Report on ‘Mitigation of Climate Change’. For example, renewable energy, combined with energy efficiency measures, are market-ready solutions that power our cities and towns while reducing the envi-ronmental footprint of millions of people. To strategize on how to take bolder steps on sustainable energy local governments will convene in Freiburg (Germany) at the Local Renewables Freiburg 2007 Conference, from 13 -15 June 2007.

Local governments are making a difference due to their unique role of policy-making combined with executive power in service provision. They are responsive to democratic pressures, and many mayors are making firm commitments to address climate protection concerns. In this context they are also empowered and supported through campaigns such as ICLEI’s Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Campaign. Here over 800 cities and municipalities have committed to, and act to reduce carbon di-oxide (CO2) emissions.

City leaders will meet and strategize on creative ways to implement sus-tainable energy solutions at community level, also addressing climate change, security of energy supply and sustainable local development. Freiburg (Germany), the host city of the event Local Renewables Freiburg 2007 (13 – 15 June 2007), is an award-winning city ready to share its 20 years of experience in this field, demonstrating sustainable energy solu-tions that make economic and environmental sense.
